Akamai CDN
First in South Africa, and only from Texo!
Akamai is the preferred partner for the world's largest websites and streaming services, and Texo is the first — and only — South African webhost to offer its clients access to the Akamai Content Distribution Network.
Software updates for Microsoft, virus updates for Symantec and Yahoo's DNS service all run over the Akamai network. Apple uses Akamai for realtime streaming of Quicktime and also for Itunes, and the FBI uses Akamai to deliver all its content on fbi.gov
Akamai has roughly 61 000 servers distributed over 1450 points of presence (POPs) and 950 networks in 70 countries, including South Africa.
What does this mean? When using Akamai, the contents of your webpages, including images, javascript and CSS files (in other words, the bulk of your website) is served from the Akamai server closest to the viewer, and not directly from the Texo server. This means that no matter where in the world visitors to your website are located, the largest portion of your website will be served from a local server. For visitors in South Africa, the files will be served from the Akamai servers in Johannesburg.
Why is this important? Not only will your visitors experience faster browsing on your website, but in announcement after announcement, Google has talked about how they want to do everything they can to make the web a faster place. In an interview, Google's Matt Cutts said that speed may soon be a ranking factor in Google's search results.
"Historically, we haven't had to use it in our search rankings, but a lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast," says Cutts. "It should be a good experience, and so it's sort of fair to say that if you're a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. If you really have an awfully slow site, then maybe users don't want that as much."
With Akamai, you will never have to worry about being penalised for a slow website!
